More Cariboo communities to have access to high speed internet

High speed internet will be coming to more communities in the Cariboo to improve connectivity, thanks to a $37 million investment.

The announcement was made this afternoon at Williams Lake’s Thompson River’s University (TRU) campus by Federal Minister of Rural Economic Development, Gudie Hutchings, and BC Minister of Citizens’ Services, George Chow.

Hutchings says internet today is seen as an equalizer.

“Internet is no longer a luxury. Everybody needs access to reliable and affordable high speed internet.” says Hutchings.

“Today we’re delighted to announce a $37 million investment to connect more than 1,900 homes in 12 communities, some of which are Indigenous households.”

Big Lake Ranch and Horsefly will be the first communities getting high speed internet, with a completion date of March 2026.

The second project will be completed December 2026, and include Alkali Lake, Lac la Hache, Williams Lake, Mahood Falls, McLeese Lake, Wildwood, 150 Mile House, 108 Mile Ranch, Bridge Lake, and Nazko.

TRU’s Academic Director, Kylie Thomas said the project will eliminate the barriers for learners unable to relocate for post secondary education, while keeping talent in the community.

She added that it would also assist in reducing student debt factored by living costs for rural and remote learners.

Telus will be providing the communities with high speed internet.

More information about the projects can be found on the Government of Canada’s website or Thompson River’s University’s website.
