A number of events are planned in Quesnel to celebrate pride month.
Julia Dillabough, the President of the Quesnel Pride Society, says they will start things off with something new this year.
“Because we’ve got a larger teen base for the queer community as well as their allies. We’ve got a teen event on June 14th that is 10 dollars per ticket, and it’s a teen disco dance.”
Dillabough says the parade will once again take place on Saturday starting at City Hall…
“It’s at noon, free for everybody to attend, and it is a marching parade. This year we’ve actually got and are encouraging people to get their wig and glitter up and to pull or push their wagons along, make sure you’ve got your boon boxes in there blasting and having fun.”
Dillabough says they will go to Lebourdais Park where the fun will continue.
“We’ve got vendors there, we’ve got DJ Scotty who will be spinning from the stage, we’ve got the flag raising right immediately after. We’ll have an elder there to bless the flag and wish us all well and safety for the event. And additionally we’ve got a kids zone this year, especially those that want to come down and enjoy some fun aspects of the kids stuff”
Dillabough says they will cap the night off with an adults only after party sarting at 7:30.
“Tickets can be purchased at Books & Company or the Den. Or you can contact us at [email protected], you can also arrange for tickets there if you are out of town.”
Dillabough says they had a logo contest this year.
“The motto for the year is “be you.” So beautiful, embracing, empowering you.” And we’ve got a beautiful logo by a community member this year. Pride is about everybody. Everybody is welcome as long as they’re based in respect and love of one another and people’s choices.”
Dillabough says the event has grown over the years.
“Ya absolutely, it has grown over the years both with the 2SLGBTQIA+ society and community members, and very importantly the allies and those that show support for those in the community.”
The first Pride Parade in Quesnel was back in 2015.
