Significant drop in the Cariboo region’s year over year unemployment rate

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region is definitely going in the right direction.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says there was a pretty big drop last month compared to a year ago.

“The unemployment rate. A year ago it was 8 percent and it has been gradually going down. For the month of May of this year it was 4.7 percent.”

Ferrao says there were roughly three thousand more people working in the region in April.

“Basically a couple of industries showed employment growth. Retail and wholesale, that’s up compared to last year, and healthcare and social assistance is also up. There is a decline in forestry, natural resources.”

The national jobless rate was 6.2 percent in April, up from 6.1 in March.

BC came in at 5.6 percent.

Manitoba (4.9%) and Quebec (5.1%) were lower.

Breakdown of all the provinces:

Manitoba 4.9%
Quebec 5.1%
Saskatchewan/BC 5.6%
Nova Scotia 6.4%
Ontario 6.7%
Prince Edward Island 7.1%
Alberta 7.2%
New Brunswick 7.5%
Newfoundland and Labrador 9.9%
