A former Cariboo cyclist in the Cops for Cancer Tour de North will have a different role in this year’s fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Quesnel RCMP Constable Anne Bock will be training riders for their 7-day 850 kilometre ride from Dawson Creek to Williams Lake.
“I get to tell them about my experiences and hope that they can learn from my mistakes and not create their own. I do get to get after them to get ton their bikes and go peddling. There isn’t the pressure on me to do as many kilometres but I like to lead by example so I’m doing them anyway just to encourage them to try and keep up because it’s so much fun.”
Bock said there was an orientation session back on May 2nd where all the riders got together to get a basic 1-0-1 of what to expect on Tour, what to expect from training, and in general what they should be aiming for.
“We also wrote a training manual that gave them a whole lot of tips and sample workout weeks. Monday do X-amount of kilometres at this kind of intensity that sort of thing. We also have a What’s Up Group that we keep together for everybody on tour and I get to reach out on that to give tips and training. I do a workout of the week and follow up with any questions they might have and then I track everybody’s progress and make sure that they are actually kicking their own butts.”
Bock noted that the important part in training for Tour is for people who aren’t seasoned cyclists to not do too much all at once.
“Don’t do 200 kilometres your very first ride of training because you won’t probably get on a bike again after that so start slow and build from there and consistency is key. Eating healthy is super important. The healthier you eat the better your body responds to any training and it just improves your health general as well which is a great to help prevent Cancer.”
Bock has ridden the Cops for Cancer Tour de North twice in the past so we asked if she would take part in this event next year.
“I’m not sure yet. I’ve ridden before and I would like to leave some room for other people to get a chance to experience how awesome it can be,” Bock said.
This Year’s Tour will begin Thursday September 20th
