Quesnel’s Board of Education approves 2024-2025 Preliminary Operating Budget

A Preliminary Operating Budget of $52,548,016 has been approved by Quesnel’s Board of Education for 2024-2025.

Secretary-Treasurer Jennifer Woollends says they ended up with a bit of a surplus.

“There is a surplus from the base budget of $188, 716. That would be used to go towards requests that were put forth by various partner groups.”

Woollends says they ended up spending more than that.

“When we solicited feedback from various partner groups, there was requests that were put forward. Of the requests it was determined that we should put in for next year for supports. Those investments amounted to $707,700.”

Woollends says that extra money was covered off by accumulated surplus from other years.

She says the majority of those supports amounted to extra staffing.

“With the School District over 80 percent of our budget is staffing, so we’re always looking to put in resources where they’re required, so additional staffing will be put in for support services, students needing additional supports.”

$231,000 went towards support services staffing, $226,000 went to Indigenous Education staffing, $142,300 for exempt staff and compliance, $57,800 to Principal staffing, and $50,600 to other.

The Board solicited feedback from the Aboriginal Education Council, the Quesnel District Teachers Association, CUPE, and the Quesnel Principals and Vice Principals Association.
