Picket lines up at CRD libraries

Picket lines are up today at the Cariboo Regional District libraries in Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.

BC General Employees Union members began picketing at the libraries this morning as their limited job action continues to escalate.

The CRD had just announced last night that it was going to reopen the libraries today.

It sent out a release today stating that the regional office in Williams Lake remains open to the public, and rural branch libraries throughout the Cariboo and Chilcotin continue to operate a curbside pickup program.

The two sides are still apart on wages.

The CRD’s offer of 11 percent over three years was rejected by 72 percent of the BCGEU members.

The union says it is looking for inflation protection for its members and is asking for 12 percent or where the Consumer Price Index is at, whichever is higher, over the 3 years.

The union says they are also hoping that better wages will address their recruitment and retention issues as they are understaffed and overworked.

Essential services, such as fire fighting, landfills and transfer stations, and emergency repairs, are not impacted by the strike.
