Ulkatcho First Nation housing over $15 million off-grid solar project

Ulkatcho First Nation will have clean energy through a new solar energy project after a $15,841,000 investment from the Federal and Provincial governments.

In an announcement, the project is said to reduce the diesel generation need in the community by 64 percent, which is equal to a reduction of 1.1 million litres of diesel a year, making it the largest off-grid solar project in Canada.

Ulkatcho First Nation, that’s power is currently 100 percent diesel generated, had studies and business case completed determining that solar power was the best alternative for the community.

Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser said “This solar energy facility will not only reduce the community’s greenhouse gas emissions, but will also bring about reduced expenses due to the shutting down of diesel generators.”

The project will also include construction of new access roads and paths, control and monitoring of the facility, fire management, security, signage, and other related assets.
