Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Restoration Project Getting Closer To Starting

Work is expected to begin this Spring on the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road 45 kilometres North of Williams Lake.

It was damaged in the Spring of 2020 due to a landslide and has been closed since that occurred.

Deputy Director of the Cariboo Road Recovery Projects, John Babineau said once work begins they expect it will take about one construction season, about three or four month to complete.

“During construction you can expect the road to stay closed and we ask the public to be mindful of that road closure as well as any construction signage that may be in place.”

Babineau said the road right now following that landslide has a very severe dip in it and was unstable for the past few years.

“The work this year would stabilize the slide through some regrading of the area, drainage improvements, and reconstructing the road itself so there’s a travel portion to travel on again.” Babineau said, “You’ll see the road that’s about the same width as it is right now. Some new ditches along the up slope, some culverts to pull the drainage along, and then just some general regrading of the area to keep it safe.”

Babineau asks the public to have some patience while this work being done.

“The residents have been very patient with us which we appreciate and we’ve been able to speak with some of them as well to let them know about the work that’s going on. From what I’ve heard they are very excited to see the road back open and to provide that community connectivity to provide that secondary access, really valuable as well in the event of wildfire that may occur. So we’re looking forward to providing that restoration to the community,” Babineau said.

The Soda Creek MacAlister Road work is one of the ten projects that for the Cariboo Road Recovery Project.
