New Electronic Fare Payment Now Available In The Quesnel Regional Transit System

BC Transit has introduced a new electronic fare system in Quesnel.

Umo introduces contactless payment methods and new fare products that improve that allow riders to pick the best options for their lifestyle and travel habits.

Director of Revenue Development for BC Transit Ryan Dennis said this new fare collection technology which will be a Umo mobility mobile app or a Umo card.

“Riders can either download the app from either Google Play or Apple app store, create an account and load funds or purchase products to their account and then use that towards the bus.” Dennis said, “If people don’t want to use the app and would prefer to use a card there is a Umo card that can be topped up and re-loaded. Those are available at Quesnel City Hall or the Arts and Recreation Centre to purchase their products in person there.”

When people ride the bus there’s a new validator onboard that sits right near where the fare box is currently and is where riders would present their mobile app or card to pay their fare when boarding.

BC Transit said the final date for Monthly Pass and paper ticket fare product sales is still to be confirmed.

“We’re going to have several months before we make a transition full over to Umo so people have the time to get familiar, get comfortable, and learn how to best use Umo to fit their needs.” Dennis said, “All the fares that are currently available in a physical product form whether it be those paper tickets, or the day passes, or monthly pass, all those are available on Umo so we’re not taking any sort of products away, there’s no changes to pricing, it’s just a new way to pay.”

BC Transit said while it is expected most riders will find one of Umo’s new payment methods a more convenient option, cash will continue to be accepted for riders who prefer it.

Dennis said there are no plans at the moment to bring Umo to 100 Mile House and Quesnel BC Transit riders.
