An already hot topic for the Cariboo region is only getting hotter with the province’s latest bail data.
The BC Prosecution Service announced on March 26th, that data manually collected between November 2022 to December 2023 showed that out of almost 4,800 bail hearings, nearly 60 percent were granted bail.
Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA, Lorne Doekson wasn’t happy with the nearly 57 percent of violent offenders being granted bail.
“The idea that this has come forward and that we’re actually seeing a reduction of the times that the courts have sought that detention of 50 percent is honestly appalling.” says Doekson.
“We have to get serious about cracking down on prolific offenders in this province.”
Doekson added that more needs to be done to keep prolific offenders off the streets.
One way he says is they could advocate to the court to make changes, and adds that there are tools that can be used.
More information on the bail data can be found on the province’s website here.
