Province Amends Mines Act

The province has amended the Mines Act to extend investigation periods.

Incidents, including the Mount Polley breach, will now have up to 3 years for the province to pursue charges for alleged offences committed under the act.

Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines, says the amendments were much needed.

Bennett adds the amendments will be beneficial.

The Act had originally allowed the province 6 months to a year to pursue charges for alleged offences committed under the act.

The amendment will be in effect for all investigations to August 1st of this year.
