Former Cariboo Resident Now TRU’s New Chancellor

Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops has a new chancellor with ties to the Cariboo.

DeDe DeRose, born in Williams Lake, is a member of the Esk’etemc First Nation and will begin her new role on March first.

TRU says DeRose steps into this prestigious role with a wealth of experience and a history of significant contributions to Indigenous student success.

Her distinguished career includes her tenure as BC’s first superintendent of Aboriginal Achievement and as an educator and principal within Kamloops-Thompson School District 73.

In a release, Marilyn McLean, chair of TRU’s Board of Governors, praised DeRose’s exceptional leadership abilities and unwavering commitment to educational excellence and community engagement.

TRU president and vice-chancellor, Brett Fairbairn, emphasized DeRose’s embodiment of the University’s core values, particularly her dedication to Indigenous education and efforts to promote intercultural understanding.

As chancellor, she will preside over convocation ceremonies and serve as a member of the university’s board of governors and senate.

DeRose succeeds Nathan Mathew whose term has ended and will be formally installed in a ceremony later this spring.
