Strike Looms At TRU In Williams Lake

The President of the Faculty Association at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops and Williams Lake says they have served 72-hour strike notice because talks have completely bogged down.

Tom Friedman says it’s not your normal negotiation where it’s all about money.

He says the key issue for them is full faculty participation in academic decision-making at the campus.

Friedman says they believe when there is full-time teaching to be done, and this really applies a lot at the Williams Lake campus, there should be full-time faculty hired by the institution.

Right now she says what they are seeing more and more of is a reliance on contract faculty, something she calls “disturbing.”

Friedman says while they do a good job they don’t have the job security or salary level that they deserve.

Friedman says there are between 25 and 30 faculty members in Williams Lake.

They will be in a legal strike position as of Thursday morning at 8.

Friedman says students can look for updates on their union website trufa.ca/students
