Williams Lake Student receives Certificate of Merit Award from Council

A Williams Lake student represented Canada in presenting the World Peace Prize on the United Nations stage.

Rea Klar, who’s attending Trinity West University, was selected one of eleven to attend the event in Bangkok, Thailand.

She says this all started after her University nominated her.

“I applied directly to the UN after that nomination, and after many interviews I was selected,” says Klar.

“and beyond that, they did interviews to select two individuals out of 350 from the world’s top schools to present the Global Peace Prize, and even then I was selected to present the award.”

Klar added that during the event they explored the question of “why are youth important to building peace?”.

She says they were empowered by hearing stories from genocide survivors, refugees, and of people who’ve experienced suffering, and is now ready to make a difference in the world.

Last Council Meeting, Klar was presented with a Certificate of Merit Award by the Mayor and Council.

She also gave advice for the youth saying when you face discomfort, to confront it, and to not stay silent when suffering, but rather speak up, because a youth’s voice is very powerful.
