Alexis Creek RCMP originally received a report of a stolen vehicles on Friday (Feb 9) night at around 10 o’clock.
Police say a Black Jeep Cherokee was reported stolen and that the owner was able to provide them with the name of the person who was believed to have taken it.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson, with North District RCMP Media Relations, says they received a report the following day of a man going into a residence and making death threats toward a resident in the home.
“Police received further reports from other people in the neighbourhood about the same suspect making similar threats. As police responded to this, they were then notified of a structure fire on the west side of the Anaham Reserve. Police then observed a church on fire on the east side of the Anaham Reserve.”
Saunderson says while investigating the fires, the Anaham Band security reported seeing a suspect trying to steal equipment n the Anaham Sub Division.
She says police then located the Jeep Cherokee that was reported stolen the previous day.
“The vehicle attempted to leave and struck a police vehicle. The jeep then side swiped the police vehicle in an attempt to leave the scene. After striking the police vehicle, the jeep went down an embankment and rolled onto its roof.”
Saunderson says the driver then attempted to flee on foot but was stopped by police.
“The suspect continued to struggle to escape and a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was used and the suspect was arrested without further incident. The suspect appeared to be uninjured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.”
42-year old Cassidy Baron Billy is now facing numerous charges, including theft of a vehicle, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to stop for police, and obstruction.
Saunderson noted that other charges could be laid as the investigation proceeds.
