The Co-Chair of the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee says they weren’t willing to sacrifice the Quesnel Kangaroos for a junior hockey team.
Jim Glassford, also the CRD Director for Area I, confirms that they passed a resolution requiring a potential junior franchise to provide the Kangaroos with $100,000 a year of the advertising money in the West Fraser Centre.
He says the group behind the junior hockey team simply wanted more than they were willing to give.
“The Kangaroos have the advertisements on the boards, they’ve got all the signs made up and everything so they have that now, so in order for the new business to come in either they’ve got to sell more advertising or somebody’s got to give. So that’s where it was left, we wanted to make sure that the Kangaroos survived.”
Glassford says it just wouldn’t be fair.
“That would be hardly fair, they’ve been here for 50 years for the most part, so we’re not going to jeopardize that franchise. There was more advertising in the West Fraser Centre than what is being utilized now, so we felt they could sell some of that or do whatever.”
Glassford conceded that this was likely a done deal.
