Avalanche Canada sees recent snowfall in the Cariboo as a benefit

Snow has finally fallen and stayed in the Cariboo, something that’s been long overdue, especially for the mountains.

Avalanche Canada is welcoming the 20 plus centimeteres of snow, with the current lack of snow the region has been seeing and a shallower snowpack.

Forecaster, Shannon Werner says when we do get new snow like this, along with wind, creates new problems.

“Basically, we’ll initially have some avalanche problems to start with with the new snow, but as it settles out, anything that adds to our snowpack right now is beneficial in my eyes.”

Werner added that anyone going to the mountains should be aware of an cracking, as it’s a good indicator that the snow isn’t quite stable.

She says the best thing to do is for people to have the right training to go out, and to check their bulletin and dive into their terrain and travel advice.

More information on current conditions can be found on Avalanche Canada’s website here.
