Classes at Columneetza Junior Secondary School in Williams Lake were cancelled for the day earlier this morning (January 17).
“Some crew on site discovered an exterior water issue and upon investigation they had a major water main issue to one of the lines that feed to the school.” Superintendent Chris van der Mark said, “Sometimes in a smaller school you can kind of get by for a little bit to see what is doable, but a school that size and the volume, that means you don’t have running water, you don’t have washroom use, it creates other safety issues as well, so the decision had to made pretty quick to cancel school at that site.”
Van der Mark said unfortunately for a lot of families school buses were already on route.
“School buses had to redirected to Thompson Rivers University so the students who were on route could be off loaded there and supervised by School District 27 staff while arrangements were being made to get them home.”
He said maintenance and services are on site and will hopefully know later this afternoon when that will be fixed.
