The 100 Mile Nordics Ski Club made a tough decision this past weekend on the fate of the Tech Northern Cup they were about to host this Saturday and Sunday.
“The Race Committee met on Sunday afternoon and we looked at weather forecasts and what little snow we have on the trials right now, we just determined that there was no way that with the forecasted amount of snow coming, maybe six centimetres, that we would be able to set up a safe race,” Gary Carlson, Executive Director and Chief of Race said.
This is the first time the Tech Northern Cup has been cancelled but Carlson noted back in the days when they held the Cariboo Marathon it was shut down because of lack of snow and other times because of cold weather.
He said it’s not unheard of in the Cross-Country Ski world that cancellations happen periodically but he’s never seen such a lack of snow in all of December in his 40-plus years living in the 100 Mile House area.
Looking ahead Carlson is hopeful that the weather changes by the Family Day Weekend in February to include a similiar event to take its place.
“We always have a pretty big event that weekend, we usually have kind of a multi-day of activities, and that’s in the works right now. There is talk about possibly holding a fun race that would just be kind of club level but we could put out invites to Williams Lake and wherever people might want to come from to be a part of it.”
