Tsilhqot’in Tribal Chair, Chief Joe Alphonse, stepped outside Legislature this morning following a historic public apology between the Tsilhqot’in National Government and Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.
The apology which was in respect to the 150th commemoration of the Chiefs who lost their lives after the Chilcotin War was very powerful according to Alphonse.
Alphonse, says the apology marks another event in the history books of BC and Canada.
Five Chilcotin Chiefs, who came unarmed to meet with Colonial officials for discussions of peace, where shackled and tried for murder on August 15, 1864.
They were hanged in Quesnel on October 26 of that year.
A sixth Chief was hanged in 1865.
Tsilhqot’in Chiefs will be witnessing the redress of their War Chiefs this Sunday.
