The holiday season brings out the best, and unfortunately, the worst in some people.
With that in mind Quesnel RCMP Sergeant Clay Kronebusch offers this tip to help avoid being robbed of your recently purchased gifts
“When out shopping during the Holiday season, avoid leaving valuable items in your vehicle. Ensure they are placed out of sight or drop valuable items off at home before doing more shopping.”
Kronebusch said it’s also important to observe your surroundings in a parking lot.
“If you’re shopping at night, park in lit areas and be aware of your surroundings when returning to your vehicle.”
If you are planning to leave town for holidays, Kronebusch noted have someone you know check in on your home regularly, have your lights on a timer and cancel your mail.
Every year criminals anxiously wait to have the opportunity to rob you of recently purchased gifts, and worst of all, rob you of your hard earned money through fake charities.
It’s important to do your homework before donating to a charity, especially online.
“There are several charities collecting for those in need at this time of year.” Kronebusch said, “Unfortunately thieves also prey on those wanting to help others. If you are planning on donating to a charity do some research to confirm the charity is legitimate and are the actual recipients of the donation before sending your money.”
And when shopping with small children in a busy or crowded shop Kronebusch said to make sure you have a plan in place, in advance, if you do get separated.
