Cariboo Memorial Hospital Phase One Project In Williams Lake Gets A Big Lift

Phase one of the redevelopment project at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake is on schedule.

That according to Project Manager Brad Mackendrick.

However, he noted they had a little delay at the start of construction this past spring with some underground services that they had to mitigate with that wasn’t in the original design of the building.

We are due for completion of Phase one in late 2026. Then we’ll move into Phase two which is the renovations of the existing facility with a completion date of early 2029. At the moment we are deep in the ground pouring foundations for the new facility. We should have ground floor level one concrete slab poured by the end of January.”

Residents have recently noticed a rather large crane in the area of the build which Mackendrick said will allow them to move equipment and materials around a very confined site.

Now almost six months in, we asked what has been completed so far.

The first stage of the project was to divert some of the onsite drainage and utilities to allow crews to then build staff parking located off of Comer Street, and then a new patient and public parking area behind the Deni House. Staff parking opened in September and in October we opened the other parking area which allowed the contractor to close the old ones so they could start digging for the new facility.”

Design Builder Graham Constructions currently has about 40 sub contractors: concrete workers, form workers, electricians and plumbers working on the Hospital site.

People might think that construction might stop during the winter season, it will not,” Mackendrick said, “it will continue right through and we work seven days a week. We’re all very excited about the project and having this crane being set up on site now is a big milestone.”
