ICBC and RCMP to start conducting holiday roadchecks

The holiday season has begun, and ICBC along with RCMP are launching their CounterAttack roadchecks this weekend.

The month long education and enforcement campaign is to combat impaired driving during the holiday season.

In a release from ICBC, they said that 21 percent of car crash fatalities in the province involve impaired driving, and are now urging drivers to plan a safe ride home.

They noted that on average, 61 people are killed and 1,404 are injured in 2,415 impaired driving related crashes in BC every year.

For the North Central, which includes the Cariboo, an average of 13 people are killed and 155 injured in 223 impaired driving related crashes each year.

If your plans involve alcohol or other drugs, other options to get home include having a designated driver, a taxi, transit, or Operation Red Nose.

More information on CounterAttack roadchecks can be found on ICBC’s website here.
