Quesnel Council to consider if it’s worth it to replace the lighting on the foot bridge

Should the City of Quesnel replace the decorative lighting on the historic Fraser River Footbridge ?

The price tag is estimated at 350 thousand dollars, and staff have raised concerns about whether or not it’s worth it.

Mitch Vik is the Chair of the Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee.

“There has been repeated vandalism on the bridge, such as cutting off lights and stealing cables. The City has already put through an insurance claim related to damage to the lights and made repairs once before. The bridge has recently experienced significant vandalism again.”

Vik went on to say that staff have considered various ways to prevent access to the bridge wiring and lights but engineering recommends no significant additions or retrofits to the structure.

Staff will now bring back a list of options for Council to consider.
