Quesnel Council endorses new housing committee

Quesnel City Council has endorsed the formation of a Housing Solutions Table.

It will act as a select committee of Council.

Tanya Turner, the Director of Development Services, presented a report at Tuesday night’s meeting.

“The establishment of a select committee to review needs assessments, housing policies, initiatives and strategies will assist the city in accelerating those tasks and formulating future housing strategic goals.”

Turner also outlined a number of topics that the committee will provide input on.

“Topics for the committee’s input will include vulnerable population and services review consideration and policy option recommendations, identification of policy and lands to support supportive housing, input on housing needs assessment development, and implementation of resulting policies, review new housing legislation and regulations and inform revisions to municipal land use policy which we know there is a bit coming up and identification of lands for future housing needs.”

Councillor Scott Elliott will Chair the committee.

“It’s very important to the community. It’s the direction that we should be moving in. There is a lot coming out of the legislation and I’m just trying to wrap my head around it as well.”

Councillor Laurey-Anne Roodenburg is the Alternate Chair.

The committee’s first job will be to come up with terms of reference and to make recommendations for appointments to the committee.
