The North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee has given staff the green light to proceed with an emergency expenditure at the West Fraser Centre.
Jeff Norburn, the Director of Community Services, says the melt-pit coil needs to be replaced.
“The melt-pit coil is located in a pit. It is where the Zamboni dumps snow that is collected off of the ice when they resurface, and it is heated through this coil from heat reclaim off of the compressors.”
There was concern around the table that this coil only lasted about 6 years.
“I think we share your concern that it’s only been 6 years since the facility opened and this coil has rapidly deteriorated and developed multiple leaks resulting in the loss of the system’s Glycol. We tried to have the coil repaired but that didn’t work so we have to purchase a new coil.”
Norburn went on to say that they were having a stainless steel coil built this time, and that it should last a lot longer than the cast aluminum coil that was installed during construction.
He says the estimated cost of the new coil will be 20 thousand dollars.
“We looked at the budget to see if there were any projects that could be differed. We have a number of projects this year that have either come in under budget, considerably under budget, or are not proceeding for various reasons. As a result there is sufficient room within the overall capital budget to absorb this emergency expenditure.”
This recommendation will now go to the Cariboo Regional District Board for approval.
