Down from last month but up from a year ago.
That sums up the Cariboo region’s unemployment rate last month.
Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, goes over the numbers.
“In October the unemployment rate came in at 5.7 percent, and compared to a year ago it was 4.5 percent, so there is an increase over the past 12 months, but compared to last month in September, it’s down. The unemployment rate in September was 7 percent.”
Ferrao says there was roughly 600 fewer people working in the region in October.
“We have 87,800 people working in October. A year ago it was a little bit higher at 88,400. The number for September was 86,800. We see more people working in construction over the past 12 months and more people in education services, but we have fewer people in wholesale and retail, and also in healthcare and social assistance.”
The national unemployment rate, released on Friday, was 5.7 percent, which was up from 5.5
BC’s jobless rate was 5.4 percent, which was unchanged from September.
Saskatchewan had the lowest unemployment rate in October at 4.4 percent.
Quebec (4.9) and Manitoba (5.2) were also lower than B.C.
