Illicit drug crisis continues to impact the Cariboo region

The Northern Interior Health Service Delivery area, which includes Quesnel, continues to have one of the highest death rates in the province when it comes to suspected illicit drug deaths.

The BC Coroners Service says the death rate through September of this year was 80.9 per 100 thousand people.

Only Vancouver was higher at 85.9 out of the 16 areas.

The Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap, which includes Williams Lake and 100 Mile House, is 5th at 57.7 deaths per 100 thousand.

There were 94 deaths in the Norhern Interior in the first 9 months of 2023.

That compares to 102 in all of 2022.

The Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap Health Service Delivery area had 108 suspected overdoses through September, compared to 154 in 2022.

Through August there were 8 deaths in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, which includes Williams Lake, 5 in Quesnel and 2 in 100 Mile House.

There were 175 suspected overdoses in BC last month.

That equates to around 5.8 people per day.
