Tips to use for pumpkins to prevent attracting bears

BC Conservation Officer Service and WildSafeBC are reminding folks to properly store pumpkins.

Like most fruits and berries, pumpkins are another attractant for bears, and steps should be taken to prevent them from showing up in communities.

The Conservation Officer Service said in a social media post that bears are in their hyperphagia phase, which is an extreme urge to eat food, in preparation for winter denning.

Some steps provided by WildSafeBC includes:

  • Keeping pumpkins indoors at night and store in a cool place
  • Avoid carving the pumpkin early to prevent accelerated decomposition
  • Discarding the pumpkin properly.

They added that pumpkin isn’t just a bear attractant, but also deer, coyotes and rodents.

More information on wildlife attractants can be found on WildSafeBC’s website here.
