Food Banks across the country have seen a significant increase in the need of their services.
Tamara Robinson, Director of Family Services and Community Outreach Director at the Williams Lake Salvation Army says they have families coming to them for assistance that have never had to before.
“We’ve seen a fifty-three percent increase at our Food Bank and a twenty percent increase at our Fresh Food Share Shelf and of course that is due to inflation. It has impacted families in a really profound way in our community when it comes to putting food on the table.”
Robinson said they do receive some funding through Food Banks BC and Food Banks Canada which they are very grateful for as well as donations from the local grocery stores.
“Donations are on a decline, which I believe that’s due to the price of food, so we are very hopeful for the Christmas Season, that’s when people tend to give a little bit more and so we are expecting that our donations will increase.”
Robinson said they definitely encourage anyone facing food insecurity to please come forward for assistance and they are more than happy to help.
The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen is open Monday to Friday serving breakfast from 9 to 9:45 and lunch from 12 to 12:45 and the Christmas Hamper registration will be from November 14 to 17 from to 1 pm to 3 pm in their dining hall.
