Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre had a busy summer

The Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre saw a busier year with wildfires.

This year, there were 76 emergency notices issued, which includes the first declaration of an evacuation order and the rescinding of an order or alert.

Manager of the Emergency Program Service, Stephanie Masun provided the areas most affected by the notices.

“Most of the fire activity was seen in electoral areas I, J, and some in K in the early season,”

“so that means out by Ulkatcho and Anahim Lake in particular, and also out by the Blackwater towards Nazko, and in those areas.”

Masun added that this year was complicated, because most of the activity was in rural areas where there’s a lack of connectivity.

Communication has always been a challenge, not only for the CRD, but also residents.

Compared to last year, she says the region was very fortunate, however this year saw a lot more fire activity than they’ve seen in recent years.

Masun says residents should sign up for the emergency notification system, to help in areas with low connectivity.
