Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA creates petition to bring financial support to seniors

Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson is hoping to bring more financial support to seniors.

He’s created a petition in response to the number of letters received by seniors in regards to the high cost of living over the last couple months.

Seniors having troubles making ends meet isn’t a new issue.

“The seniors advocate has actually talked about just putting hundreds of dollars into the pockets of seniors that are in that low income category.” says Doerkson.

“When I see seniors in our community that are living on $1800 a month, it seems like an incredible challenge to make anything work.”

Doerkson added that when he presented the petition to the Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce, he saw a large group of people nodding their heads, and had dozens of signatures after.

As for how many signatures Doerkson’s looking to get, he hopes to get it into the hundreds, but says the sky’s the limit.

Anyone looking to sign the petition can do so at Doerkson’s office, the Pinkney Complex in 100 Mile House, or the Seniors Activity Centre in Williams Lake by October 1st.

The petition may be taken online at some point, but will keep taking signatures manually for now.
