Red Bluff Band Being Ignored By Mount Polley ?

Quesnel City Council is going to bat for the Red Bluff Indian Band in calling out Imperial Metals for a lack of consultation with the band.

The issue centers around the company’s now successful application to discharge treated waste water from the Mount Polley mine into Quesnel Lake which will then flow through their traditional territory into the Fraser River.

Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says for some reason Imperial Metals keeps forgetting about the Lhtako Dene First Nation.

He says they keep going to the Williams Lake Indian band and the Soda Creek band and while they are doing fairly extensive consultation with them and the TNG, they keep forgetting that the Red Bluff are the first band down the Quesnel River.

The City will write a letter of support for the band.

Councillor Scott Elliott raised the issue at the table at this week’s Council meeting after the City was copied a letter from the band to BC’s Environment Minister.

He also talked about the city being better informed on this topic, given that it effects Quesnel’s namesake lake and river.
