Quesnel foot bridge will be closed for parts of the summer

The foot bridge in Quesnel will be closed off and on for 4 to 8 weeks.

Chris Coben, the Director of Capital Works and Infrastructure with the City, says work will begin next week on Tuesday (July 4).

“We’re looking at redoing the power supply to the foot bridge lighting, but also an electrical upgrade which would include some lighting up the Riverfront Trail to below the hospital. Part of the project would be a new electrical service which would involve a pole relocation.”

Coben says the electrical on the bridge is quite old.

“This will improve the lighting.  We’ll have more capacity for additional lighting and better lighting which of course includes the upgraded electrical lights along the trail.”

Coben says pedestrians will have to use the Moffat Bridge as a detour.

He says the goal is to reduce the impact as much as possible, and he says the bridge itself won’t be closed for 8 weeks.

“But with that said a lot of the electrical work will likely have to come back, just waiting for equipment and supplies, so that will be the key factor.  We may very well close the bridge and then open it up again, yet to close it to traffic again.”

Cobin says 80 percent of the cost of the 1.1 million dollar project will be covered off by a grant from the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

Fresno Construction has been hired to do the work.

Coben says the work was originally supposed to be done back in 2018 but it was delayed by some archeological work and COVID.
