Quesnel Fire Department responds to downtown dumpster fire

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire in downtown Quesnel this (Tuesday) afternoon.

Duty Officer Bart Schneider says the call came in just after noon to a fire in behind the co-op.

“Myself as the Duty Officer responded and I had two engines and the rescue truck as well respond to put it out.  It was a bit of a stubborn fire because the dumpster itself was plastic and it melted on us, so we had a little bit of trouble getting the lid separated from the body of the dumpster, but ultimately we did get the fire out.”

Schneider says there were some vehicles nearby but they were quickly moved.

He says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“At this point in time there is nothing suspicious, I don’t know what caused it so yes it is kind of under investigation.”

Schneider says they were on scene for about 40 minutes.

He says some bystanders were initially using fire extinguishers to try and knock the fire down, but he says they stayed back so there were no injuries.
