Williams Lake Councillor helps create Indigenous caucus at FCM

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) began a new Indigenous caucus, alongside Williams Lake Councillor Michael Moses.

Moses presented the idea to FCM CEO, Carole Saabe, and in less than 24 hours, the caucus was created.

“This will make it so that this caucus provides Indigenous representation to the whole country.” says Moses

“Every single city, every single community, every single regional district, will now be at least partially affected by this Indigenous caucus.”

Moses added that the beginning of the caucus would be completely formed by Indigenous people, rather than a framework given by the FCM.

The first meeting went over introductions, and what’s important to each representative’s region, communities, and nation.

He says that around half a dozen goals and ideas were created, along with a temporary chain of command until leadership is decided.

Moses believes that this will change how municipalities will deal with their partnering First Nations, and other Indigenous governing bodies, potentially forever.
