Quesnel Museum turns 60 this year !

60 posts for 60 years !

That’s the idea behind a social media campaign celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Quesnel Museum.

Museum and Heritage Manager Elizabeth Hunter says the celebration is mainly through social media.

“We’re featuring unique items in the collection getting people who have been involved with the museum one way or another over the years to pick their favorite thing in the museum and just feature a little story on those items every second week.”

Hunter says the campaign started during Heritage Week in February.

She says the Museum opened in Lebourdais Park on August 16th, 1963.

“It started as a cinder block building that was I think about 1,600 square feet and some additional space for the tourist bureau.  We’ve been sharing our space with the tourism centre since 1963.  And then shortly after that they added a little gallery with a bit of basement storage in the early 70’s, and then a big expansion in 1986 putting on our big back wing that was climate controlled.  Glass was added for the exhibits over the years.”

Hunter says the footprint hasn’t changed since then but they have kept updating things over the years and their last renovation was during COVID in 2020 and 2021.

A formal celebration for 60 years will be held at the museum in the summer.

“Saturday, August 12th will be the celebration of the anniversary.  And we have somebody coming to do an appraisal clinic.  People will be able to book an appointment to find out the value of things from their personal collections.”

Hunter says there will also be an anniversary tea.
