Safe Boating Campaign launched for National Safe Boating Week

Boating BC launched their Safe Boating Campaign ahead of National Safe Boating Week (May 20-26).

The waters can pose many potential dangers for boaters, with most being easy to avoid as long as preparations are done.

“This time of year, waters are much colder than they are mid summer, and people may not realize that, and so falling into the water can be very shocking particularly at this time of year.” says Bruce Hayne, Executive Director.

“Generally speaking, boating is a very safe activity as long as people just follow some basic guidelines.”

Hayne added that he encourages new boaters to take extra courses in addition to the pleasure craft operating card.

In a release from Boating BC, they said that in 2022, there were 15 recreational boating fatalities in the Pacific Region, with a total of 83 across Canada.

For more information on safety while boating, you can find it on Boating BC’s website here.
