100 Mile House Fire Rescue responds to downtown fire caused by lightning

On May 10th, 100 Mile House Fire Rescue were notified of a tree that caught fire.

The fire, which was caused by a lightning strike, occurred downtown on Cedar Avenue at around 3:00pm.

Roger Hollander, Fire Chief, happened to be close by when the fire began.

“I was actually doing a public talk at the Community Hall, when somebody from the street came in and advised that there was a tree on fire just outside the Community Hall.” says Hollander.

“We were able to cordoned the area, and just out of precaution we evacuated the daycare where that tree was on the property.”

Hollander added that they had an engine on scene, however the fire self extinguished.

The major hazard he noted was that the tree was very green, which has a possibility of falling.

Hollander noted that a breaker from the daycare was tripped, with no other damages or injuries caused.
