Cariboo residents hoping to sample the 2016 World Whiskey of the Year this holiday season are bound for disappointment.

The Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye – the first Canadian spirit to win the honour – is sold out across the province of British Columbia.

BC Liquor Store employee Ken, from 100 Mile House, credits social media for the feverish sales:

Once it got publicized in social media – like on Facebook – it really took off and I think that was probably the reason it just flew out of here and we sold out.

Another shipment of the award winner won’t be due until closer to the end of the month for provincial liquor stores in Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House.
