National Day of Mourning observed in Williams Lake

Williams Lake City Hall hosted a National Day of Mourning ceremony earlier today.

Last year, workplace injuries and illnesses claimed 181 lives in BC, which was an increase of 161 in 2021.

“I’ve lost a family member and a coworker to a workplace accident, I don’t want other families to go through that.” says Latisha Kirechuk, Speaker for the Steelworkers.

“We within the steelworkers here in Northern BC, lost one member at work, within the last year due to a severe asthma attack. Not necessarily work related, but it hasn’t been ruled out.”

Kirechuk added that she wants to see people go to work, be safe, and go home to their families without injury.

Mayor Surinderpal Rathor also spoke at the ceremony, saying that it’s important to remember those who have lost their lives on the job, and to keep a safe workplace.
