Quesnel Mayor Questions School Closure Scenarios

The topic of possible school closures came up at this week’s City Council meeting in Quesnel.
Mayor Bob Simpson is questioning the logic behind the Cornerstone Planning Group, the consultants hired to come up with potential scenarios for the School Board, leaving Voyageur Elementary School off of the list of schools potentially targeted for closure.
He says when he was at the West Quesnel Land Stability meeting the other night he and some others took a tour of the school and looked at the cracks at Voyageur.
Simpson says they were also told about a recent incident where some lighting fell as a result of physical movement of that building.
Simpson says he asked the School Board Chair, who was at the meeting, what the nature of the facility assessment was that was behind the closure scenarios.
He says he was told that Cornerstone looked at the nature of the costs associated with maintaining the buildings relative to the number of students that are in the buildings and not an actual physical assessment.
Simpson says he has a meeting with Quesnel’s Board of Education and Senior School Staff on Friday. (Dec 4)
