City of Quesnel gets 6 million dollars for Johnston Bridge

The Federal government, through the Union of BC Municipalities, made a major funding announcement today.

In total, more than 103.5 million dollars was announced for 45 community infrastructure projects in B.C., including the 6 million dollars for the Johnston Bridge.

A 10,000 kilogram restriction was placed on the bridge by the City back in October of 2018 after a bridge inspection revealed some corrosion problems on some of the main beams.

Council has been scrambling since then to try and come up with the $11, 466,000 needed to repair the bridge and the aging water main crossing and the city water main crossing of the bridge.

The actual price tag for the bridge is about 8.8 million.

City Council unanimously decided back in May, at the time when the funding application was made, to take 2.35 million dollars out of the Utility Reserve and 3.116 million from the Capital Reinvestment Reserve to pay for the rest of the project.
