(With files from Darin Bain-MyPGNow)

Prince Rupert RCMP was called to the Ocean Centre Mall this morning on a priority 1 call for shots fired.

Some members who were in the area responded immediately, and quickly determined it was not an active shooter, and that it was an isolated incident between two people.

Police say the suspect, a  44-year-old male, is believed to have shot the victim, a 52-year-old woman, before attempting to take his own life.

The two individuals were known to each other.

The woman was pronounced dead on scene, and the man was taken to hospital, and is currently in critical condition.

“It’s still in the early stage of the investigation and therefore, limited details can be released at this time,” said Cst Gabriel Gravel, Media Relations officer of the Prince Rupert RCMP.

The Prince Rupert RCMP want to reassure the public there is no active threat at this time.

The public is also asked to avoid the Ocean Centre Mall while police conduct their investigation.

The mall has also been closed to the public until further notice.
