Lock your Vehicle, Keep Valuables out of Sight, remind RCMP

Williams Lake RCMP is reminding vehicle owners to lock their doors and keep valuables out of sight.

Inspector Milo MacDonald, says although thefts from vehicles are up 54% from last year according to the latest crime stats, it’s not something that the City has a lot of, to begin with.

“What it’s usually tied to is the activities of a handful of offenders,” he sadi.

“So if we have 2 or 3 people who are committing thefts from vehicles then that will vastly increase the stats in a town this small so it’s just a case of waiting to catch up to these people.”

MacDonald goes on to say that a lot of incidents could have been avoidable.

“Cases where we’ve had valuables in plain sight and unlocked vehicles-literally even wallets on the front seat or purses on the front seat with an unlocked door.”

There were 159 reported calls of thefts from vehicles in Williams Lake from January 1st through October 31st, compared to 73 in 2014.
