The City of Williams Lake will be issuing friendly reminders to residents and downtown business owners on Monday that snow has to be removed from sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours of snowfall or they could be fined $100 per day as changes come into effect next month.
City Councillor as well as Chair for the Public Works Committee, Ivan Bonnell says they will be prioritizing the removal of snow on sidewalks along major hospital and school bus routes, and in handicap parking spaces in order to make the best use of resources.
“With the eye of recognizing that the economics of the community and the region at large is not growing so we need to get some cost controls in place in order to be able to maintain services at their current levels so it is financially affordable for everybody.”
Bonnell says this will address approximately 50%-about 100 km of sidewalks within the community.
The city’s budget for sidewalk snow removal is $80,000 this year (same amount as the 2014-2015 season with $17,000 remaining) with an overall snow removal budget of $515,000.
Sidewalk snow removal will continue on Western and Mackenzie avenue.
Also new for this winter season in terms of snow removal, the City will not be using beet juice, replacing it with magnesium chloride instead.
