New Cattle Pen Planned at Alex Fraser Park

Plans are in the works for a new cattle pen at Alex Fraser Park.

The volunteer society responsible for running the park has put a request in for 65 thousand dollars in capital funding from the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee.

That would be in addition to 35 thousand that is already budgeted for the group for 2015.

The total cost of the project is more than 157 thousand dollars but the group is hoping to get some funding from other sources.

The project is broken down into three portions.

One is to excavate the contaminated soil in the current pen and move it off-site for composting.

It would then be replaced with a new gravel base with better drainage.

The second part of the plan is to pour two cement slabs…one to accommodate loafing sheds and another for feeding and the final step would be to install new steel posts around the pen and to put new corral panels in place.

Spokesperson Greg Andrews was asked about phasing in the project…

Andrews says the present pens, besides being an eyesore, are more than 20 years old.

In addition to that, he says the soil for the cattle is saturated with manure and feeding is no longer acceptable there.
