Parking Expansion-City to contribute $250,000 for roundabout

Increased parking at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex will mean a roundabout at Proctor Street and Fifth Avenue; something the City of Williams Lake has not budgeted for.

Councilor and Chair of the Finance Committee, Scott Nelson says the roundabout is estimated at a price tag of $300,000.

“To redo the entire parking lot, to add to the parking lot that’s about $1.3 million dollars so that’s already been accounted for,” he said.

“This is above and beyond and I think we believe as a community we want to move forward, we want to enhance the area, we want to make the traffic safe, and we want to make it that it’s smooth flowing out of the complex.”

Nelson, as well as Mayor Walt Cobb, and Councillors Sue Zacharias, Jason Ryll, and Craig Smith voted in favor of the City to contribute up to $250,000 for the roundabout at last night’s council meeting.

He says the City will be looking at three options to assist in securing the funds.

“One we’ll look in our current capital budget, the second thing we’ll do is look at financing it over two years, and the third thing that we would take a look doing is possibly looking at using our development cost charges to assist paying with this.”

The lot expansion once completed will result in 242 stalls, an increase of 86%.
