Builders And Homeowners In West Quesnel Will Have To Wait

Building restrictions in the West Quesnel Land Stability area will remain in place for a while.

Council passed a motion on Monday (Nov 2nd) night clarifying it’s position on that topic.

It stated that there will be no opportunity to relieve the current building restrictions until land movement has been reduced to an acceptable level for a sustained period and with adequate precipitation to make sure that the movement has been slowed to that manageable level.

That acceptable level of movement is 1 millimetre a year.

Any building, once permitted, would also be subject to professional geotechnical engineering advice.

Council also passed a motion to implement a hazardous area development permit tool as part of the Official Community Plan.

This is basically designed to shift risk away from local governments to qualified professionals and the private property owners.

Building restrictions have been in place in the West Quesnel slide area since 2001.

A public meeting on West Quesnel Land Stability will be held at Voyageur Elementary School on November 19th.
