Practice Kitchen Fire Safety This Thanksgiving Weekend

Other than Christmas, Thanksgiving is also one of the busiest days for people to cook big meals.

That’s why Fire Departments throughout the Cariboo want to remind you that it’s important to be fire smart when in the kitchen preparing the family dinner.

Roger Hollander is the Fire Chief of 100 Mile Fire Rescue.

“Home fires are caused as a result of cooking. Certainly kitchen safety is a campaign that is run every other year it seems because of that stat but certainly practicing good fire safety in the kitchen is huge”.

Hollander also had these fire safety tips.

“Make sure you don’t leave cooking unattended. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, those are the big ones, also make sure that everything is off when you leave the kitchen as well. Sometimes those burners do get left on and forgotten about given the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving dinners.”

Other tips include avoiding wearing loose-fitting clothing and rolling up your sleeves when cooking.

Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires and most importantly never throw water onto a grease fire.

Keep flammable things like oven mitts, wooden utensils, your clothing, and food packaging away from the stovetop.

And keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from a hot stove.
